HELMET DRIVE FOR COLLEGE SETTLEMENT CAMP
KICKS OFF AT THE ANNUAL CELEBRATION

Buy a camper a helmet and keep them safe while they learn to ride
Hello fellow SCU-ers!

SCU members have been known to disagree about what constitutes the best gear for road cycling. But I am sure every member agrees that all kids should be wearing a proper fitting helmet in good condition whenever and wherever they ride. We want to make sure that’s true for all the campers at our non-profit partner, College Settlement Camp.

As you may know, College Settlement Camp allows us to use their Horsham campus to park our shed and hold events like our picnic. In return, we make an annual donation to their award-winning youth biking program. For many campers, this is where they first learn to ride a bike and how to do so safely.

This year the Camp has come to SCU with a special request. Their inventory of helmets is no longer up to the task of adequately protecting young, growing brains. Many of their current helmets are suffering from age and rough use. (They’re great kids, but they are still kids, and kids can be hard on gear.) Just as importantly, they have found an increasing demand for large and extra large sizes to accommodate today’s voluminous hairstyles.

SCU has risen to the occasion by starting a Helmet Drive to provide the helmets needed to keep the campers safe as they learn to ride. And new riders do fall occasionally! There are many ways you can participate in the Helmet Drive as an SCU member.

The Helmet Drive kicks off at the Annual Celebration. Through our long-time sponsor, Guy’s Bicycles, we have been able to make a bulk purchase of thirty name-brand helmets at the remarkable price of $20 each. At the celebration, you will have the opportunity to buy a helmet for the Camp from SCU’s inventory for less than you may spend on coffee this week.

Another option at the Celebration is to bring a helmet you purchase yourself*. If that’s your preference, we suggest shopping at Guy’s or our newest sponsor, Bikeworks. All helmet donors will be recognized in the next Chainletter. There will also be a donation jar at the Celebration if cash is your preferred style of giving.

Not coming to the Celebration? We will miss you, but you can still participate in funding the drive through the Camp’s Biking Fund page at the link below. (This is similar to a GoFundMe page.) To help track our progress, please mention SCU Helmet Drive in your donation message. Funds raised through the donation jar and the Biking Fund page will be used to purchase additional helmets through Bikeworks.

I know every SCU member values the time they spend on their bike. Teaching kids to ride gives them a skill they can enjoy over their entire lifetime. Buying them a proper fitting helmet protects them today and encourages helmet use as adult riders as well.

Thanks in advance for your support

* Helmets must be unused and in their original box. For liability reasons, no used helmets can be accepted no matter how good their condition.
