Welcome to Suburban Cyclists Unlimited! We are a non-profit community of recreational cyclists riding at various paces as we tour the roads and trails of our surrounding counties in Southeastern PA, predominantly in Montgomery and Bucks. Weekday and weekend rides are available as well as social and bike events throughout the year.

Suburbuan Cyclists Unlimited will hold elections for our 2026 Excutive Committee at our December 2025 Meeting. The follwing members are candidates for the Executive Committee.

President ● Steve Muth

I think most club members know me by now, if not as the current President, at least as that guy on the crazy bike. But as far as my relevant bio goes, here it is: After joining the club in 2006, I was Ride Director in 2009, President from 2010 to 2013 and in 2017, Event Director in 2018, and President 2019 to 2022, part of 2023, 2024, and 2025. I am retired from two careers, Civil Engineering and Secondary Science Education. Many skills that l learned in my work life have been helpful in my time on the Executive Committee. The membership’s needs have evolved over the years, and I have worked to keep the rides and social events meaningful to all members, new and old. I have been fortunate to have capable and talented people sitting on the Executive Committee, and I hope to continue leading them in this process in 2026. Also, this year I will be working towards planning for leadership succession in the very near future. New ideas and ‘fresh blood’ keeps our club vibrant and dynamic in a changing world. I would be honored if you would vote for me as President for 2026.

Ride Leader Director Steve Baxter

My name is Steve Baxter, and I’ve been a member of SCU for about 2 years, coinciding with my retirement after 30+ years working in chemical R&D. Since joining I’ve enjoyed leading rides (usually weekday morning rides like RYBT). As a club, we have many rides each week that attract riders of various ages and abilities, but I believe that our ride leaders are a big part of what makes our club strong. Good ride leaders always have the safety of the group in mind, but also need to be welcoming, friendly, and flexible. I recall one ride a few months after I joined—I was not feeling at my best and was falling back; the ride leader dropped back and paced me back to the group. Growing and supporting our ride leaders will keep our club strong. I look forward to supporting them and working with the rest of the Executive Committee in this position.

Membership Director Pat Butcher

I'm running for the Membership Coordinator position, to be an official help to this wonderful Suburban Cyclist Unlimited club. I moved to Pennsylvania from northern New Jersey. In NJ, I occasionally rode my bike with a great local club, but I was focused on being a very committed competitive runner. That is until one of my knees eliminated most of its cartilage. Sadly, I had to give up running to avoid surgery, but my bicycle was screaming for some riding. So, my cycling journey began.

Shortly after beginning cycling, life changes had me move out of NJ. I sat around for six weeks gaining weight, suffering from tremendous knee pain, enduring spreading arthritis in hands and feet, and ignoring any form of exercise. Doctors prescribed surgery, medications, and frequent appointments. A week before I was to go under for surgery number one, I backed out, jumped on my bike, and looked for SCU. I spent three weeks trying to lose weight and get into shape, to at least ride with a C-group, with another local PA club. Mission accomplished. Then the time came to join a ride with SCU. Oh My Word! I've never seen so many HILLS in my life, nor met so many riders that liked them. During my rides with the group I had discovered that I was highly allergic to hills, but the SCU riders ignored my whining and encouraged me to keep riding. I was feeling all of the SCU love.

Sharon had a huge hand in my perseverance, Tom in my climbing, Katie in my joy, Chris in my speed, Steve in my courage, Wes in my drive, and SOOOO MANY more SCU riders had encouraged, guided, welcomed, and aided me, especially with water. That's a tremendous amount of love from a club. So, here I am now, after many SCU rides that included hundreds of climbs and granola bars, tons of laughter and excitement, plenty of learning opportunities and growth, and a whole lot of praying, now riding in a faster group, with less health problems, a greater passion for cycling, and joyful love for the entire Suburban Cyclist Unlimited club. Even my daughter, who never wants to ride a bike, loves helping SCU and hearing stories about my riding adventures with SCU. That speaks volumes about the beauties of being an SCU member. I'm loving it all

Suburban Unlimited Cyclists has taken me to this incredible new height of riding and deeper love for its members. For that, I am very grateful and want to extend the SCU love by being a help to its overall membership. From the couch, to the pedal, over the climbs, to the Suburban Cyclist Unlimited family, I'm all in! Picture that.

Long before discovering SCU, I was born in New Jersey and grew up in Hershey, Pennsylvania. I began my cycling journey at the age of 5 and never looked back. I am a graduate of Penn State with a degree in Architectural Engineering. I am a registered professional engineer and a Principal with Jacobs Engineering in Philadelphia where I direct the design of large data center projects around the world.

I have a grown son and growing daughter, live in Havertown and regularly commute to Montgomery County for rides.  My first SCU ride was in 2019 and I joined the club after the Covid-19 pandemic cleared in 2021. I do club rides frequently year-round and lead many B rides as well.  My ever-expanding cycling world has included about half of the US states as well as Italy, the UK, Sweden, Germany, France, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia.

I am active with several civic and community groups and my college fraternity’s scholarship foundation where I serve on the communications and public relations committee.  I have significant experience over the last 20 years with the communications needs of volunteer-based and non-profit organizations such as SCU.  I would be honored to continue to serve SCU as Director of Digital Communications in 2026!
